Restoration Project Announcements

Threshold Environmental’s Boorokup Project Named
Inaugural Sponsored Restoration Project for Biodiversity Conference 2025

The Biodiversity Conference 2025 (BC25) is proud to announce that Threshold Environmental’s Boorokup (Bore’ra’cup) project has been selected as the recipient of its inaugural Sponsored Restoration Project, supported by BC25’s Nature Positive Diamond Sponsor, Ecocene.

More than just a knowledge-sharing platform, BC25 is about taking responsibility for our footprint and ensuring the conference leaves a legacy — for both people and nature. While bringing together custodians, researchers, practitioners, industry, government, and community from across Country, BC25 seeks to model the values it promotes: equity, transparency, and a Nature Positive future.

“This conference is an opportunity to share knowledge, but also to lead by example,” said Dr Renee Young, Program Director of the Western Australian Biodiversity Science Institute and Chair of the BC25 Organising Committee. “Through the support of Ecocene, our Nature Positive Diamond Sponsor, we are proud to launch the Sponsored Restoration Project — a practical step toward leaving a Nature Positive legacy for Western Australia.”

The Boorokup project was selected for its exceptional integration of ecological best practice and cultural engagement.

The collaboration with Binalup Rangers and citizen scientists, its focus on Threatened Ecological Communities, habitat creation, and reconnecting landscapes through vegetation corridors set this project apart,” said Mr Kruger, CEO of Ecocene. “This approach is strategic, inclusive, and deeply grounded in place.”

Located in WA’s southwest, the Boorokup project combines science, culture, and community on a significant scale. Through the partnership, biodiversity enrichment plantings and in-situ seeding will be funded, helping establish diverse, locally representative plant communities. Just as importantly, the project supports cultural practice and community wellbeing — employing Binalup Aboriginal Corporation Rangers, involving Elders on site, and bringing people together through shared activities such as a post-planting community barbeque.

We are honoured that Boorokup has been recognised as the Biodiversity Conference 2025 Sponsored Restoration Project,” said Mr Jonson, Director of Threshold Environmental. “This acknowledgement affirms our commitment to achieving excellence in the restoration of native ecosystems and our respect for the connection of Noongar people to Country.

Boorokup demonstrates how large-scale, carbon-funded restoration projects can deliver exceptional biodiversity outcomes when ecological science is prioritised.

Together with our partners, we’ve restored 250 hectares of previously cleared land to a mosaic of native plant communities, supporting the recovery of threatened ecological systems including Wandoo Woodlands and proteaceous-rich Banksia Woodlands. In partnership with the Binalup Aboriginal Ranger Group, we’re rebuilding habitat and healing Country.

We sincerely thank the BC25 Committee and Ecocene for their support, which allows us to continue this important work for the benefit of nature, culture, and future generations.”

The Nature Positive Diamond Sponsorship is a new initiative for BC25, designed to ensure the conference’s emissions are not only minimised but actively offset — in ways that strengthen biodiversity, culture, and community across Western Australia.
